Does FAQ schema help your videos get cited by AI?

Updated August 2026

It can help machine legibility, but do not add it expecting Google rich results, because those are gone. Google removed FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026. The FAQPage schema type is still valid and is still parsed by Bing, Perplexity, and AI crawlers, so it remains useful as structured question-and-answer content a machine can read. Use it where you have real buyer questions and answers on the page, not as a guaranteed citation lever.

FAQPage schema versus VideoObject schema. They do different jobs, and a rich video page can use both. VideoObject describes the video itself: what it is, who is in it, its transcript, its thumbnail, its upload date. FAQPage describes the questions and answers present on the page in a structured form. VideoObject tells the engine what the video is; FAQPage tells the engine which questions the page answers, in the buyer's own words.

What changed in 2026, and why it still matters. Google officially removed FAQ rich results, the expandable question-and-answer dropdowns in Search, on May 7, 2026, after restricting them to government and health sites in 2023. So FAQPage no longer earns you anything in Google's visual results. But the markup itself is not gone: it remains valid at schema.org, and following FAQ guidelines keeps it readable for other systems that still process it, including Bing, Perplexity, and AI crawlers. Directional.

How to use it well. Only mark up questions and answers that actually appear on the page. Use single official answers, not user-submitted ones. Put the full question and answer text in both the markup and the visible page. Keep promotional copy out of the answer fields. Phrase the questions the way your buyer would actually ask them.

Keep in mind. Schema is table stakes, not a silver bullet. Whether FAQPage markup materially lifts AI citation is not proven, and content structure and factual density matter more. One 2026 audit of 5,000 sites found only a modest correlation between valid schema and AI citation. Directional and correlational. So add FAQ schema where you have genuine buyer questions and answers, because it is cheap, valid, and machine-readable, but do not expect it to win the citation on its own.

Do it yourself, step by step
  1. Use it only where real Q&A appears
Add FAQPage schema only to pages that actually show buyer questions and answers in the visible text.
  2. Write questions in the buyer's words
Phrase each question the way your buyer would ask it. Use one official answer per question, not user-submitted ones.
  3. Match markup to the page
Put the full question and answer text in both the schema and the visible page. Keep promotional copy out of the answer fields.
  4. Validate it
Check the markup with a schema validator. FAQPage is still valid and still read by Bing, Perplexity, and AI crawlers.
  5. Set expectations
Google removed FAQ rich results in May 2026, so this earns no visual result there. Add it because it is cheap and machine-readable, not as a citation lever on its own.
