What is video schema, and why does your video need it?

Schema is a small layer of code that labels your content for machines. For video, VideoObject, Clip, and FAQ schema tell an AI engine, in a structured form it trusts, exactly what the video is, who is in it, what it says, and what questions it answers. It is the most literal way to translate a video for the machine.

Think of a barcode. A person reads the label on a can and knows it is soup. A machine needs the barcode. Schema is the barcode for your video, invisible on the page and working underneath. Most sites already emit some schema automatically, but often it is incomplete or invalid, so it is worth checking that yours is valid and actually describes the video. Be honest about what schema does. It is not a magic switch for citations. Controlled studies are mixed on direct citation lift, and content structure and factual density matter more.   1. Check what you already have
    Most sites already emit some schema. Run your video page through Google's Rich Results Test to see what is there and whether it is valid.
  2. Add VideoObject
    Add VideoObject schema that names the basics: title, description, thumbnail, upload date, and the transcript.
  3. Mark chapters with Clip
    If the video has chapters, add Clip markup so each section is labeled.
  4. Validate it
    Re-run the Rich Results Test until it passes cleanly. Most schema in the wild is present but broken, so this step is the point.
  5. Keep expectations honest
    Schema helps a machine parse the page. It is table stakes, not a guaranteed citation, so pair it with a strong description and transcript.
